Moving to a new city or state can be expensive and a serious budget buster for most families. Save money by cutting the average costs of relocation using these tips.

Relocating to a new city brings with it many stressful moments as one struggles to organize, pack and move their family’s belongings. Some people may even find themselves stuck with a double mortgage payment for at least one month. Moving costs can quickly escalate, if proper planning is not taken into account. Hiring a mover may seem like a convenient option, but since prices tend to be high, it is better for one to do it themselves.

Where to Get Free Moving Supplies

The cost of boxes and other essential moving supplies can easily be eliminated, cutting the overall cost of relocating. Many grocery and retail stores will give away boxes if asked. Simply visit the local grocery store just after stocking time (typically in the morning) and make a request for unwanted and used boxes at the costumer service center. Managers and employees are extremely helpful most of the time and will give one more than enough boxes to get started packing. Come back periodically throughout the week if more boxes are needed.

For other moving supplies, do not buy them from a moving company who will jack up the prices for the sake of convenience. Buy packing tape at the dollar store or discount retailers. Use up masking and duct tape that are lying around the house in place of packing tape. Rather than purchase expensive sharpies and markers for labeling boxes, tape a piece of paper with the item’s contents written on it in colorful ink.

Instead of packing peanuts, use linens and soft clothing to cushion fragile objects. Pillows and comforters are great for wrapping and padding large pieces of furniture such as mirrors and glass table tops. This method also creates less boxes that need to be moved.

Moving Without Movers

Rather than hiring a moving company for a relocation, rent a truck and invite family members and friends who are able to help. This saves a significant amount of money, and with the proper planning, it can be done quite easily. Proper planning is essential for moving this way.

One may want to consider hiring a mover to come and load particular pieces of furniture if they are too heavy or bulky to move safely by oneself. By doing everything else without professional moving help, it is possible to save a lot of money on moving costs.

Moving Essentials and Organization

Being organized is the best way to save money on moving costs. Knowing where things are prevents one from having to purchase an already owned item due to it being lost. Label each box clearly and mark the room it is supposed to be in to avoid losing things and paying for their replacement before it’s unpacked.

Dedicate one box for moving essentials such as household tools, refreshments, cleaners, toilet paper and medication. Also include any important documents in this box. This prevents scrambling and shopping for an everyday item during the moving days. Being prepared saves money when moving.
