Moving can be easy if one is organized and deliberate. Help make a move easier by following these steps.

No one likes to move, and certainly no one craves the stress that moves often bring. Relocation, whether it be to another city, state or just across town can be very frustrating if one is not organized. Thankfully, there are ways to ensure a move goes quicker and smoother with less stress by planning out a moving timeline in advance and sticking to it.

When to Pack Before a Move

Typically, the average family knows they will be moving at least two months ahead of time. This time should be spent wisely, and items should be slowly packed every day rather than all at once the week before the big move. Start packing no later than one month before the anticipated move date if possible. Two boxes a day over a one month period is easier than sixty boxes over a two day period.

Start by packing items not used everyday, and label the box with it’s contents to quickly retrieve something if needed. Don’t over-pack boxes, and make sure they are not too small or too big for easy moving. Pack books in smaller boxes to avoid a box getting too heavy. Have a list on hand of all the contents inside of each box for quick inventory and insurance purposes if hiring a mover. Make sure boxes are not open-ended so that items do not accidentally fall out.

Properly package items by using packing peanuts, bubble wrap and packing tape when needed to avoid anything breaking.

Prepare for Change of Address

Make a list of all the institutions that will need to be contacted for a change of address. This includes all utility companies, cell-phone companies, banks and lenders, schools and magazine subscriptions. Fill out a change of address form at the post office, but be aware the post office will only forward old mail for a certain period of time.

Make a list with phone numbers and addresses of the new services that will need to be turned on at the new home. Call in advance so there are utilities running at both locations on the date of the move. Plan to have utilities turned off at the old address one day after the move and turned on at the new address one day prior to moving.

Moving Day Essentials

On moving day, make sure to have a separate box or two of essentials. This includes things like cleaning supplies, important documents, refreshments and snacks, toilet paper and tools for assembling, hanging and general work that might need to be done at the new home.

Having things ready in advance helps a move go smoother and more quickly with less stress. An organized move also helps avoid losing or misplacing items when they are needed.
